Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant I (Lab Outreach Admin, Variables, 1.0 FTE - 40 hours per week) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:
PROCESSING: Aliquot and store blood specimens in appropriate containers and at proper temperatures to assure integrity for testing. Measure, aliquot, and prepare urine and body fluid specimens for testing. Work closely with Send Out personnel to assure quality of specimens for reference laboratory testing. Troubleshoot / researche physician orders to ensure accurate order entry of procedures requested.
DOCUMENTATION AND DATA ENTRY: Obtain complete documentation for the registration process including signatures and related billing information. Understand and adhere to all compliance related procedures. Accurately enter patient demographic data into HIS, LIS or Outreach IT system. Accurately accession physician test requests into LIS. Assure validity of edited test orders and ad on testing.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND HANDLING: Explain collection procedure clearly to patient and properly identify patient prior to collection. Handle requests for special services, i.e. Codes, STAT and Timed draws, prudently and efficiently. Collect and label capillary or venipuncture specimens according to established procedure as needed to support Phlebotomy team. Triage specimens in Central Receiving area, receivs appropriate specimens into LIS, distribute specimens to correct testing area or to processing area.
CLIENT RELATIONS: Maintain a clean, professional personal appearance. At all times conduct himself/herself in a professional manner as a representative of PAMC. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, clients, and the general public. Cooperate closely with Client Services, other laboratory personnel as well as other departments within PAMC. Receive incoming laboratory calls as the backup to Client Services. Assist callers with patient results, specimen requirements, and other information as able. Direct calls or page calls to appropriate staff members.
COMMUNICATION AND TEAM WORK: Use clear and concise verbal and written communication with staff and the public. Build effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and laboratory customers. Use positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote lab goals. Assist other personnel as needed without being asked. Complete pay records and personnel forms accurately and correctly. Willing to work alternate shifts and areas as needed by the department.
QUALITY CONTROL / QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Perform quality control, quality improvement, specimen tracking, and maintenance procedures as required for shift responsibilities. Contribute accurate statistics or information to the Lab Services QI processes as requested. Notify customers or clients of unacceptable STAT specimens, arranges for recollection. Volunteer for additional responsibility to assist supervisor. Accurately document follow-up on client complaints in a timely manner. Participate on Lab Services QI Committee if requested.
SAFETY AND EDUCATION: Comply with all Laboratory and PHSA safety policies and procedures. Adhere to hospital biohazard waste program. Maintain clean, well-stocked working area. Operate hospital vehicle safely at all times. Maintain a clean DMV record at all times.
PROBLEM SOLVING / CRITICAL THINKING: Use good judgment and common sense in making decisions. Accepts responsibility for decisions and learns from incorrect judgments. Demonstrates creativity to solve problems within scope of responsibility. Takes the lead in troubleshooting specimen problems for the area. Refer situations deviating from standard protocol to Lead CLA or supervisor.
PRECEPTOR: Serve as mentor or preceptor for new employees during their orientation period. If delegated, be responsible for signing off new employee checklists in coordination with Lead CLA. Aids supervisor and Lead CLA in developing orientation checklists and competencies.
Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.
Required qualifications for this position include:
High School diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license may be required
Preferred qualification for this position include:
- 6 months experience in a laboratory setting required with experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing.
