Providence is calling a Clinical Nurse Specialist Advanced - ED (Ak Nursing Prof Support, Days, 1.0 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • Direct interaction with patients, families, and groups of patients to promote health or well-being and improve quality of life. Characterized by a holistic perspective in the advanced nursing management of health, illness, and disease states.

  • Conduct comprehensive, holistic wellness and illness assessments using known or innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, and direct and indirect methods.

  • Obtain data about context and etiologies necessary to formulate plans of care, and to identify and evaluate outcomes.

  • Assess the effects of interactions among the individual, family, community, and social systems on health and illness.

  • Assess the impact of environmental/system factors on care.

  • In collaboration with clinical staff develop and facilitate processes to identify potential risks to patient safety, autonomy and quality of care based on assessments across the patient, nurse and system spheres of influence with the intent to prevent unattended consequences and errors.

  • Synthesize assessment data, advanced knowledge, and experience, using critical thinking and clinical judgment to formulate plans of care for clinical problems amenable to CNS intervention.

  • Develop and evaluates evidence-based clinical interventions and systems to achieve defined patient outcomes.

  • Demonstrate accountability for clinical outcomes and participates with other interdisciplinary team members maintaining continuity of care for patients and families

  • Assist staff in the development of innovative, cost effective programs or protocols of care.

  • Evaluate nursing practice that considers Safety, Timeliness, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Efficacy, and Patient-centered care.

  • Differentiate between outcomes that require care process modification at the individual patient level and those that require modification at the system level.

  • Meet expert competencies and clinical requirements of staff RN in the area of speciality/division.

  • In collaboration with clinical leaders helps to ensure care guidelines are based in evidence, up to date, and relayed to staff.

  • Human Resources: Use independent judgment, effectively recommending and/or taking action related to hiring, evaluating performance, disciplinary action and employee complaints and concerns.

  • Evaluate staff new to a clinical setting during probationary period and at 90 and 180 days to determine progression in knowledge and skill acquisition appropriate to clinical setting.

  • Consultation: Patient, staff, or system-focused interaction between professionals in which the consultant is recognized as having specialized expertise and assists consultee with problems solving.

  • Provide consultation to staff nurses, medical staff and interdisciplinary colleagues.

  • Communicate consultation findings to appropriate parties consistent with professional and institutional standards.

  • Collaborate with healthcare delivery team to transition patients across the continuum of care

  • Analyze data from consultations to implement practice improvements.

  • Systems Leadership: The ability to manage change and empower others to influence clinical practice and political processes both within and across systems.

  • Facilitate the provision of clinically competent care by staff/team through education, role modeling, teambuilding, and quality monitoring.

  • Perform system level assessments to identify variables that influence nursing practice and outcomes.

  • Operationalize nursing practice and system interventions that will promote patient, family and community safety.

  • Use effective strategies for changing clinician and team behavior to encourage adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery.

  • Provide leadership in maintaining a supportive and healthy work environment.

  • Provide leadership in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to implement outcome-focused patient care programs meeting the clinical needs of patients, families, populations and communities.

  • Use leadership, team building, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills to build partnerships within and across systems; including communities.

  • Consider fiscal and budgetary implications in decision making regarding practice and system modifications.

  • Collaborate to develop appropriate budgets for on-boarding of staff new to a clncial area

  • Leads system change to improve health outcomes through evidence based practice by designing programs to improve clinical and system level proceses.

  • Collaboration: Working jointly with others to optimize clinical outcomes. The CNS collaborates at an advanced level by committing to authentic engagement and constructive patient, family, system, and population-focused problem-solving.

  • Establish collaborative relationships within and across departments that promote patient safety, culturally competent care, and clinical excellence

  • Provide leadership for establishing, improving, and sustaining collaborative relationships to meet clinical needs.

  • Coaching: Skillful guidance and teaching to advance the care of patients, families, groups of patients, and the profession of nursing.

  • Coach patients and families to help them navigate the healthcare system.

  • Develop health information and patient education appropriate to the patient’s developmental level, health literacy level, learning needs, readiness to learn, and cultural values and beliefs.

  • Provide education to individuals, families, groups and communities to promote knowledge, understanding and optimal functioning across the wellness-illness continuum.

  • Participate in pre-professional, graduate and continuing education of nurses and other health care providers:

  • Complete a needs assessment as appropriate to guide interventions with staff;

  • Promote professional development of staff nurses and continuing education activities;

  • Implement staff development and continuing education activities;

  • Mentor nurses to translate research into practice.

  • Mentor staff nurses, graduate students and others to acquire new knowledge and skills and develop their careers.

  • Support staff new to a clinical setting to assist them move their clinical skills to the competent arena

  • Researcher: The work of thorough and systematic inquiry. Includes the search for, interpretation, and use of evidence in clinical practice and quality improvement, as well as active participation in the conduct of research.

  • Analyze research findings and other evidence for their potential application to clinical practice

  • Working with clinical staff designs programs for effective implementation of research findings and other evidence in clinical practice

  • Cultivate a climate of clinical inquiry across spheres of influence:

  • Evaluate the need for improvement or redesign of care delivery processes to improve safety, efficiency, reliability, and quality.

  • Foster an interdisciplinary approach to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research, and translation of research into practice

  • Facilitate the quality improvement agenda for unit, department, program, system, or population

  • Provide leadership in the design, implementation, data collection and evaluation of unit-based and system-wide process improvement initiatives.

  • Participate in conduct of or implementation of research which may include one or more of the following:

  • Identification of questions for clinical inquiry

  • Conduct of literature reviews

  • Study design and implementation

  • Data collection

  • Data analysis

  • Dissemination of findings

  • Ethical Decision Making, Moral Agency, and Advocacy: Identifying, articulating, and taking action on ethical concerns at the patient, family, health care provider, system, community, and public policy levels.

  • Maintain expert clinical expertise in area of specialty by:

  • Engaging in a self-evaluation process, seeking feedback regarding own practice; from patients, peers, professional colleagues and others:

  • Seeking out learning opportunities in advanced clinical areas outside of area of specialty as needed.

  • Attending and participating in advanced skill seminars as needed

  • Foster professional accountability in self and others.

  • Facilitate resolution of ethical conflicts:

  • Identify ethical implications of complex care situations

  • Consider the impact of scientific advances, cost, clinical effectiveness, patient and family values and preferences, and other external influences.

  • Apply ethical principles to resolving concerns across the three spheres of influence

  • Integrate ethical provisions in all areas of practice. Follow the “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services” developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

  • Facilitate patient and family understanding of the risks, benefits, and outcomes of proposed healthcare treatment to promote informed decision making.

  • Advocate for equitable patient care by participating in organizational, local, state, national, or international level of policy-making activities for issues related to their expertise

  • Promote the role and scope of practice of the CNS to legislators, regulators, other health care providers, and the public.

  • Implement care/services that recognize age/diversity specific needs/issues of customers served.

  • Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree from a clinical nurse specialist program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. (NLNAC).

  • Current RN license in state of Alaska.

  • Current APRN – CNS license in the state of Alaska.

  • Current certification as CNS.

  • Current certification in area of specialty (i.e., CEN, CCRN).

  • Current core course completions in BLS, ACLS, PALS or NRP.

  • Three (3) years registered nursing experience in area of specialty.

  • Two (2) years clinical leadership responsibility.
